We took the night bus from Potosi to Tupiza. The bus arrived at 3.00 AM in the town and as we had a really shitty bus this time, we almost didn't sleep. In the bus we were the only tourists and the rest only locals, who were prepared with giant super thick sheets for the night ride. Some felt so hot below their sheets that they opened the window. We were freezing sooo much!! So, we arrived in the middle of the night and we decided to go to a hostel to sleep, instead of waiting until 6.00 that the first coffee shops and places open. We followed a women who brought us to her house for the night. The next morning we changed and we went to the most fancy hotel in town.
Tupiza is very small, just a few streets, right in the middle of a desert. It was incredible! Also, the town is still pretty high, at an elevation of 3000 m. Tourism started only recently in the area and little Tupiza is building one pizzeria after the other. All restaurants were actually called pizzeria! :) It also had what we truely loved about Bolivia: the market with the eateries with women cooking the awesome local food in giant pots.
After sleeping to gain new strengh, we did a walk around the town. In about 5 minutes you can walk outside and you are in a desert.
Every week they organize a market where people from all the neiborghood communities come to sell and buy cheap food and products. There was even a guy with an alive snake which, he sweared, would heal from one from all pains (by using the skin).
We went for a walk outside the town with an Austrian friend, Martin, we had met they day before. The landscape is really gorgeous. On the way following the railway, we crossed some (almost) ghost adobe villages and the almost dried-out river. The formations and colors were like from another planet. We also had to walk over the train bridges and some of them where quite high, even if not visible in the photos :) .
We got almost run over by this train!!! :)
